MA English Language and Literature

Students who have not studied English as a core course in the degree programme should qualify an eligibility test conducted by the College. The Entrance Examination be of 100 marks and of 2 ½ hours duration and shall test the applicants’ knowledge of literatures in English, Literary aptitude, sensibility, skills of appreciation and criticism, and writing ability. In order to bring in uniformity in the standards of assessment, the candidates for the entrance examination are instructed to familiarize themselves with the following works:
1. William Wordsworth – ‘‘Lucy Gray’’

2. Thomas Gray – ‘‘Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard’’
3. Charles Lamb – ‘‘Dream Children’’
4. Rabindranath Tagore – ‘‘The Creative Ideal’’ (Essay in the Creative Unity)
5. William Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet
6. Girish Karnad – Hayavadana
7. Arundhati Roy – The God of Small Things
8. William Golding – Lord of the Flies
9. Matrix 1 (Film)
10. Chemmeen (Film)
The scheme of the examination will be as follows
➢ 20 Objective questions of 2 marks each (on general literary concepts, devices, authors, periods etc.)
➢ 2 paragraph questions of 5 marks each (on concepts, themes, devices and other features of the works prescribed)
➢ One short essay of 10 marks (to evaluate general awareness of literature and reading)
➢ Two short essays of 10 marks (on concepts, themes, devices and other features of the works prescribed)
➢ One essay of 20 marks (Literary appreciation of a given poem/literary piece)
