The Department of History was established in the year 1957 with Economics and History as the two main subjects. The department was affiliated to the University of Kerala earlier and got affiliated to the University of Calicut in 1968. It offers under graduate programme in History with a sanctioned strength of 180 seats (60 students in each class as per the statutory limit fixed by the University of Calicut).

Mission of the department is to provide the students with knowledge of human experiences by a comparative study of the past and contemporary societies. It helps the students to engage in the most rigorous historical enquiry and debate by developing  the ability to conduct research, analyze, assess evidence and articulate sound conclusions.

Vision– By not knowing the past, it is not possible to know the present or future. History teaches how we became who we now are! The vision of the department is to inculcate in students the necessity to create a better future by perceiving and understanding the past well.

Motto – TO KNOW ONESELF

The department has a good library with approximately 2000 books. It also has a museum a wide collection of statues, coins, megalithic urn burials, maps, thaliyola inscriptions, tribal implements and ornaments.
